What Is a Raised Height Toilet Suite?
A raised height toilet suite is a toilet whose pan sits higher than a standard pan. There is less distance to lower yourself into, so sitting down is a shorter and more controlled movement, and standing back up starts from a higher point. For someone with sore knees or hips, or someone who has started pushing off the vanity to get up, that difference matters every day.
In Australia you will see it sold as a raised height toilet, a raised height toilet suite or a raised height toilet pan, and overseas it is often called a comfort height toilet. A raised height close coupled toilet is the common version where the cistern sits on the back of the pan, so it looks like an ordinary toilet.
Raised Height Toilet Suite or a Clip-On Raised Toilet Seat?
Both have their place, and the right choice depends on how long the need will last.
- A clip-on or adjustable raised toilet seat: fits over the pan you already own, is available straight away and comes off again. It can be enough while someone recovers from surgery.
- A raised height toilet suite: a permanent toilet that is plumbed in, sits firmly under weight and looks like an ordinary toilet with nothing added on top.
If the extra height has become a permanent part of how the house needs to work, the raised height suite is the version to install.
What Is Involved in Replacing a Toilet With a Raised Height Suite?
Replacing a toilet with a raised height suite is a straight swap in the same position, not a structural change. Three things decide whether the swap is simple or needs more work:
These are worth checking before you choose a suite, and we give clear and upfront pricing before any work begins. If the toilet is also leaking or running, mention it when you call; our toilet repairs and installation page covers general toilet work.
If you are not sure which of these the bathroom needs, tell us who uses it and what they find hard, and we will explain the options.

Does a Raised Height Toilet Need WaterMark Certification?
Yes. Toilet pans and flushing cisterns are both listed on the WaterMark Schedule of Products, and the Australian Building Codes Board says a product of a listed type must be WaterMark certified before it can be installed and must be installed by a licensed plumbing practitioner. If you are buying the suite yourself, look for the WaterMark and licence number on the box, or search the WaterMark product database by brand or model before you order it.
Licensed Toilet Installation and Your Certificate of Compliance
Replacing a toilet suite is licensed plumbing work. In NSW you need a licence to do any plumbing work, whatever the cost of the work (NSW Government: plumbing, draining and gasfitting licences). When the plumbing work is finished, the plumber completes a certificate of compliance and gives a copy to the person who arranged the work (NSW Government: plumbing inspection documents). Keep it with your property records.
Blue Rhino Plumbing holds NSW contractor licences 289152C and 356773C, which you can check on the NSW licence register.
Choosing the Right Raised Toilet Height
The right toilet height depends on the person who uses it: their own height, the strength in their legs and how they move. That is why there is no single correct height. Where an occupational therapist has assessed the person and written a recommendation, we choose a suite to match it. Where there is no report, tell us who will use the toilet and what they find hard, and we will explain the suites that suit the bathroom.
Occupational Therapists and Allied Health Professionals: Raised Height Toilet Referrals in Sydney
If you are an occupational therapist, you can refer a client to us for a raised height toilet, fill out a contact form and include the required the toilet height and any grab rail positions, or call us on 0468 014 771.
Physiotherapists, case managers and other allied health professionals can refer a client or send a report in the same way, and we will work to it. If the existing waste or water connection limits the suites that will fit, we will explain the options to you and the client before anything is ordered.
Our accessible plumbing page explains referrals for the other fixtures in your report.

Raised Height Toilets With Grab Rails and Bidet Seats
A raised height toilet can be installed at the same visit as other accessible bathroom fixtures:
- Grab rails: a rail beside the toilet gives something solid to push up from. See our bathroom grab rails page.
- A bidet seat: a raised height toilet can take a bidet seat as long as the seat suits the shape of the pan, which helps someone with limited reach stay clean without help. Our bidet installation page covers the seats we install.
If the whole bathroom has stopped working for the person who uses it, we can renovate it as licensed bathroom builders.
Our bathroom renovation page explains how we plan and quote the work.
