Where Bathroom Grab Rails Should Go

A grab rail is only useful where the person’s hand actually reaches, and that is not always where it looks neatest. People favour one side, turn a particular way in the shower or push up from the toilet at a certain angle, so the right position depends on how the person moves. The usual places for bathroom grab rails are:

  • Beside the toilet: a handhold to push up from and lower down against, so sitting and standing are controlled movements.
  • At the shower entry: a handhold for stepping over a hob or onto a wet floor.
  • Inside the shower: a rail to hold while turning around, reaching for the taps or standing up from a shower seat.
  • Near the basin: useful where someone steadies themselves on the vanity.

We fit grab rails with or without an occupational therapist assessment, including a single rail on its own. If an occupational therapist has assessed the person, their report sets the positions and heights, and we fit the rails to it. If there is no report, tell us who will use the rails and what they find hard, and we will talk through the positions with you.

What a Bathroom Grab Rail Is Fixed Into

A grab rail has to be fixed into something solid. Wall sheeting and plasterboard are linings: they give a flat surface for tiles and paint, but they are not built to carry a person’s weight through one hand. The rail has to be anchored into the wall framing, into timber backing fitted behind the lining for that purpose, or into brick or block with fixings made for masonry.

You cannot see what is behind a wall from inside the bathroom, so the wall construction has to be checked before a rail position is settled. Where the best position for the hand has nothing solid behind it, backing can be added, although in a tiled wall that may mean lifting tiles. If a bathroom renovation is already planned, that is the easiest time to put backing where the rails will go.

Fitting Grab Rails to a Tiled Bathroom Wall

Most bathroom grab rails go into tiled walls, and tiles need more care than a painted wall.
A tile will crack if it is drilled carelessly, and in a shower area there is a waterproofing membrane behind the tiles that has to stay sealed. Every hole through the tile needs to be sealed around the fixing so water cannot get into the wall behind the shower. of these the bathroom needs, tell us who uses it and what they find hard, and we will explain the options.

Suction Grab Rails Compared with Fixed Bathroom Rails

Suction rails have their place. A suction rail sticks to a smooth tile or glass surface, goes on in seconds and comes off again, which suits a short stay with family, a holiday or a rental where nothing can be fixed to the wall.

.For a rail that someone will use on every day, particularly the sudden weight of a hand grabbing for support, a fixed rail is the much safer choice.

Occupational Therapists and Allied Health Professionals: Grab Rail Referrals In Sydney

If you are an occupational therapist, you can refer a client to us for grab rail installation , fill out a contact form with what is required for your client and we can get the work started or call us on 0468 014 771.

Physiotherapists, case managers and other allied health professionals can refer a client or send a report in the same way, and we will work to it. We fit the rails to your positions and heights, and if a specified position has nothing solid behind it, we will explain the options to you and the client before fitting.
Our accessible plumbing page explains how referrals work for the other fixtures in your report, and when a bathroom renovation is the better option.

Grab Rails With Other Accessible Bathroom Fixtures

Grab rails can be fitted at the same visit as other accessible plumbing fixtures:

  • Raised height toilet: a suite that sits higher than a standard pan, so getting up takes less effort. See our raised height toilets page.
  • Bidet seat: a seat that washes with water, so someone with limited reach can stay clean without help. Our bidet installation page covers the seats we install.
  • Lever taps: taps that can be pushed with the side of a hand rather than gripped and twisted. See our tap repairs and installation page.

If the bathroom cannot be made safe with rails and fixtures, for example when a step-over shower hob has become a barrier, we can renovate it as licensed bathroom builders. Our bathroom renovation page explains how we plan and quote the work.

Grab Rails in Rental Homes and Strata Units

A grab rail is fixed to the wall, so in a rental home the tenant needs the landlord’s written permission before it goes in (NSW Government: making changes to a rental property). In a strata building, check with the owners corporation or building manager first if the wall is common property.on limits the suites that will fit, we will explain the options to you and the client before anything is ordered.
Our accessible plumbing page explains referrals for the other fixtures in your report.

Called out for an emergency at end of Oct and Rueben turn up at my property earlier than expected. Recount my problem to him and he patiently surveyed my driveway and while could not initially identified the source of the problem, he asked to survey my backyard as well. Sure enough the problem was there although the problem/symptoms were at the front of the house. Thank you for your time and delayed your dinner then to sort out my issues. Appreciate your professionalism and great work ethics.

I can’t recommend Reuben and Isaac highly enough! They recently came to my home to fix a complicated plumbing issue that had stumped several other plumbers. Not only did they diagnose the problems, but they also explained everything clearly. Their professionalism, skill, and attention to detail was very impressive. It was a relief to finally have the issues resolved. If you’re looking for plumbers who really know what they’re doing, these are your guys!

The boys did an absolutely fantastic job, with very little notice. They even corrected some work a previous plumber did. Fixed the pipes in my tiny kitchen reno, then came back and connected my appliances once the benchtop was done. Polite, friendly, they made me laugh. Would use them again. Can’t wait to use my kitchen once the electrician finishes the power points.

Rueben was a pleasure to deal with right from the start—nothing was ever a problem. He always kept me updated on what he was doing, and his team was very professional and clean. It’s so hard to find good, reliable tradespeople these days who don’t try to rip you off or do dodgy work. Blue Rhino Plumbing is very highly recommended—5 stars!

Bathroom Grab Rail FAQS

Find answers to common questions about our plumbing services, pricing, and 24/7 availability across Sydney.

Grab rails go where the person’s hand reaches during a movement: beside the toilet, at the shower entry, inside the shower and sometimes near the basin. The exact positions and heights depend on how the person moves, and where an occupational therapist has written a report, we fit the rails to it.

Yes, and most bathroom grab rails are. The tile has to be drilled cleanly, the rail has to be fixed into something solid behind it, and each hole has to be sealed so the waterproofing behind the shower stays intact.

A suction rail is handy as a portable aid, but its grip depends on the tile surface staying clean, flat and unbroken. For a rail someone will rely on every day, a fixed grab rail anchored into the wall is the safer choice.

No. We fit grab rails with or without an OT assessment, including a single rail on its own, and you can talk the positions through with us. Where an OT is already involved, their report sets the positions and heights, and we fit the rails to it.

Yes, with the landlord’s written permission. NSW rules say a tenant needs the landlord’s written permission to make changes to a rental property, so ask the landlord or agent before booking.
