Gas Cooktop Installation
A gas cooktop installation is usually one of three things: a like for like replacement of an old cooktop, a change from an electric cooktop to gas, or a new cooktop going into a renovated kitchen. For a replacement, we turn off the gas, disconnect the old cooktop, connect the new one, test the connection for leaks and check that every burner lights and burns properly. If the cooktop is moving to a new spot on the bench, the gas line has to be moved and reconnected as well, and we run that pipework as part of the installation.
Before you buy a cooktop, check which gas your home uses.
The NSW Government advice on using a gas fitter is to know your gas supply before you buy any gas appliance, and NSW Fair Trading says every gas appliance sold must be marked with the type of gas it is built to use.
If you are not sure whether you have natural gas or LPG, ask us when you book and we will check it for you.
If you are buying the cooktop yourself, look for the approval label. This matters if you are looking at a cooktop sold online from overseas, because a gas fitter may only install certified appliances and products.
Gas Oven Installation
We install built-in gas wall ovens and freestanding gas cookers, where the oven and cooktop come as one unit.
A freestanding cooker can be connected with a bayonet fitting, so the cooker can be pulled out or replaced later without anyone cutting into the gas line.
When we replace a gas oven, we disconnect the old oven, connect the new one to the gas supply, test the connection for leaks and check that the oven lights and runs properly.
A licensed gas fitter must be used for any repair or renovation involving gas, and that includes relocating or replacing a gas appliance.
Gas Appliance Installation Across Sydney
When we connect a gas appliance, we connect it to the supply, test the connection for leaks, and check that the appliance lights and burns properly before we leave. When we install or service a gas space heater, we also check for carbon monoxide, so that the heater is not spilling combustion products back into the room.
If you are buying the appliance yourself, check two things before you buy it. NSW Fair Trading says every gas appliance sold must be marked with the type of gas it is designed to use and must carry an Australian recognised certification label. Because each appliance is marked for the gas it is designed to use, tell us whether your home runs on natural gas or LPG and we will make sure the appliance and the fittings match that supply.

Gas Regulator Replacement for LPG Cylinders and Gas Appliances
A gas regulator brings the gas pressure down to the level your appliances are built to use. Homes on LPG have a regulator at the gas cylinders, and many gas appliances have their own regulator fitted where the gas line connects. If the flames are low or uneven on every burner, or you can smell gas around the cylinders, a faulty regulator is one possible cause, and we check it along with the rest of the gas installation.
You can change over your own gas cylinders, because swapping a cylinder is exempt from the definition of gasfitting work in NSW. Replacing the regulator is different. Building Commission NSW lists connecting or disconnecting a gas regulator as gasfitting work, which needs a licensed gas fitter. A new LPG regulator also comes with a certificate of inspection, which is explained in the next section.
Do You Need a Licensed Gas Fitter to Install a Gas Appliance in NSW?
Yes. In NSW you need a licence to do any gasfitting work, whatever the cost of the work and whether the property is a home or a business. Building Commission NSW defines gasfitting work to include installing, altering, extending or repairing a gas installation, and connecting or disconnecting a gas appliance or gas regulator, except where the appliance plugs into a gas outlet socket or the part is designed to be readily detachable. That covers every service on this page, including connecting a cooktop or oven you bought yourself. You can check a gas fitter’s licence details online or by calling 13 27 00 before the work starts.
Gas Compliance Certificates in NSW
After we install a gas appliance, repair a gas leak or replace a regulator, we give you the gas compliance certificate that NSW law requires and lodge it for you. Which certificate you receive depends on your gas supply.
For natural gas from the mains network, the certificate is a certificate of compliance. Building Commission NSW requires the gas fitter to test the installation for defects and submit the certificate of compliance to Building Commission NSW within five business days of finishing the gas work.
For LPG, or bottled gas, the certificate is a certificate of inspection. Within five business days of finishing the gas work, the gas fitter must inspect every gas cylinder, gas regulator and gas appliance connected to the installation, test the whole installation for defects, attach a compliance plate to the installation and give the certificate of inspection to the owner. The gas fitter must also keep a copy of the certificate of inspection for five years.
Since 1 March 2026, gas fitters must lodge both types of certificate through the Building Commission NSW eCert portal, and emailed or posted copies are no longer accepted.
The NSW Government guide to using a gas fitter says the certificate must include the gas fitter’s name and licence number, and that it confirms a licensed gas fitter did the work to the relevant industry standards and protects you against faulty work. Keep your copy with your property records.
