A blocked drain never picks a good time. Whether it is a toilet that will not clear, a shower filling up around your ankles, or a kitchen sink backing up mid dinner, Blue Rhino Plumbing clears it and finds out why it happened. We are Sydney local, we answer the phone around the clock, and we turn up with the gear to sort the blockage on the spot in most cases.

We are a licensed and fully insured Sydney plumbing team (NSW contractor licences 289152C and 356773C), owner run by Rueben, and we treat an overflowing or completely blocked drain as urgent work.

Blocked Drain or Toilet? What to Do First

A few simple checks can save you a mess before we arrive. None of this replaces a proper clear, but it can stop things getting worse.

  • For a blocked toilet: Don’t keep flushing. One flush that doesn’t clear is enough to tell you something is wrong, and repeated flushing risks an overflow. If you have a plunger, use one that covers the trap (the outlet) and give it several slow, deliberate pushes rather than rapid ones.
  • For a blocked sink or basin: Check the drain cover isn’t just clogged with hair or debris, it’s the most common cause. Avoid repeatedly pouring boiling water into PVC pipes, and skip the chemical drain cleaners, they rarely work on a proper blockage.
  • For a blocked shower: Hair build-up at the drain is usually the cause of slow shower drains. You can try lifting the hair out by hand, or use a small drain hook from the hardware store.
  • If the toilet is overflowing right now: Turn off the water supply to the toilet. There’s an isolation valve on the wall or floor behind the pan. Turn it clockwise to stop the flow while you wait for us.
  • If all sinks and toilets are slow draining: If the whole home is affected, call us. Multiple slow drains at once usually mean the problem is further down the main line, not at any one fixture.

How We Clear a Blocked Drain

There is no single tool for every blockage. What is right depends on where the blockage sits, what is causing it, and the type of pipe. Here is what we use and when.

  • Plunger and hand tools: For a simple blockage close to the fixture, a proper plunger or a hand auger is often all it takes. It is the quickest, lowest cost option when the problem is shallow and local.
  • Drain machine and electric eel: For blockages further down the line, we run a motorised drain machine, often called an electric eel, through the pipe. The rotating cable breaks up the blockage and pulls it back or pushes it clear. It is a reliable way to restore flow in longer runs and older pipes.
  • Hydro-jet drain cleaning (high pressure water jetting): For grease, sludge, silt and stubborn build-up coating the pipe walls, we use a high pressure water jetter. It scours the full bore of the pipe with a focused stream of water rather than just punching a hole through the blockage the way a snake does, so the pipe is left properly clean and flowing, not just clear enough to limp along. It is the method of choice for recurring blockages.
  • CCTV drain inspection to find the cause: When a drain keeps blocking, or the cause is not obvious, we send a waterproof camera down the line. It pinpoints exactly what is going on inside the pipe: roots, a crack, a collapsed section, a belly in the line, or a solid object, and gives you a fixed plan rather than guesswork. It is also ideal for a pre-purchase drain check. See our CCTV drain inspection page (/cctv-drain-inspection/) for more.
  • Root removal: Roots that have found their way into a pipe are cut out with specialised mechanical cutting heads run through the line, then flushed clear with the jetter. Because roots grow back through the same crack or joint, we will usually camera the pipe afterwards and talk you through relining the entry point so it does not keep recurring.
  • Pipe relining (no-dig): Where a pipe is cracked, letting roots in, or partially collapsed, clearing the blockage alone will not hold. Relining cures a new pipe inside the old one to seal cracks and keep roots out, usually without any excavation, so your paths, driveway and garden stay put. The new liner can last around 50 years, and it usually works out cheaper than digging up and replacing the pipe. We only recommend it once the camera has shown it is the right fix.

Why Drains Block and How to Reduce the Risk

Knowing what caused the blockage is half the job. These are the causes we see most often in Sydney homes.

  • Grease and fat build-up: Cooking fat poured down the sink is liquid when it’s hot and solid when it cools, coating the inside of pipes over time until the flow chokes down to nothing.
  • Hair and soap scum: The combination of hair and soap residue is behind the majority of slow bathroom and shower drains. It knits together at the drain and slowly narrows the outlet.
  • Wet wipes and sanitary products: Wet wipes, including those labelled flushable, do not break down in the same way toilet paper does. They snag and gather in the line and are a common cause of blocked toilets.
  • Tree root intrusion: The smallest crack or poorly sealed joint in an underground drain is enough for a root to find its way in. Once inside, it keeps growing and catches everything that flows past.
  • Foreign objects: Children’s toys, toothbrush caps, cotton buds, jewellery. Toilets and drains collect things they were never meant to handle.
  • Collapsed or damaged pipes: In older Sydney homes, clay or concrete sewer pipes can crack, settle, or partially collapse over time, which slows the flow and traps debris.

Called out for an emergency at end of Oct and Rueben turn up at my property earlier than expected. Recount my problem to him and he patiently surveyed my driveway and while could not initially identified the source of the problem, he asked to survey my backyard as well. Sure enough the problem was there although the problem/symptoms were at the front of the house. Thank you for your time and delayed your dinner then to sort out my issues. Appreciate your professionalism and great work ethics.

It was a relief to finally have the issues resolved. If you’re looking for plumbers who really know what they’re doing, these are your guys!

The boys did an absolutely fantastic job, with very little notice. They even corrected some work a previous plumber did. Fixed the pipes in my tiny kitchen reno, then came back and connected my appliances once the benchtop was done. Polite, friendly, they made me laugh. Would use them again. Can’t wait to use my kitchen once the electrician finishes the power points.

Rueben was a pleasure to deal with right from the start—nothing was ever a problem. He always kept me updated on what he was doing, and his team was very professional and clean. It’s so hard to find good, reliable tradespeople these days who don’t try to rip you off or do dodgy work. Blue Rhino Plumbing is very highly recommended—5 stars!

Blocked Drain FAQS

Find answers to common questions about our plumbing services, pricing, and 24/7 availability across Sydney.

We’re Sydney-local and treat overflowing or completely blocked drains as urgent. Call us and we’ll give you an honest ETA.

We’d rather you didn’t. Most off-the-shelf drain cleaners don’t clear a genuine blockage, they just sit in the pipe. They’re also harsh on pipe materials and fittings, and caustic chemicals in the line make the job more unpleasant and potentially hazardous for our team when we arrive.

A drain that drains slowly and then clears is a partial blockage working its way towards a full one. It won’t fix itself, and the next episode will be worse. Getting it cleared while it’s still draining is far easier and cheaper than dealing with it once it’s completely blocked.

Not necessarily. A single slow drain usually points to a localised blockage close to that fixture. If two or more drains are slow at the same time, particularly in different parts of the house, the blockage is likely in the main line, which needs professional attention.

A drain that blocks repeatedly after clearing usually means the underlying cause was never addressed. Clearing the blockage restores flow, but if there’s a crack letting roots in, a section of pipe that’s collapsed or sagging, or years of grease coating the pipe walls, the same problem will keep coming back. A CCTV camera inspection is the quickest way to find out what’s actually going on, once we can see inside the pipe, we can tell you whether it needs a proper clean with high pressure jetting, a reline, or something else. Clearing it again without investigating is just delaying the same call.

A drain machine, or electric eel, uses a rotating cable to break through and pull back a blockage, which is ideal for roots and solid obstructions. High pressure water jetting scours the full width of the pipe with water, which is better for grease, sludge and build-up on the pipe walls. On some jobs we use both. The camera tells us which one the blockage calls for.

Yes. Blocked stormwater and downpipe drains are common after heavy Sydney rain, often from leaves, silt or roots. We clear them with the same tools and can camera the line if it keeps happening.

Yes. Blue Rhino Plumbing holds NSW contractor licences 289152C and 356773C and is fully insured. Every job is done by a licensed plumber.
