A Bathroom Renovation Built by Plumbers

As a licensed bathroom builder in Sydney, the one thing I hear more than anything else is: “We just want it done properly, the first time.” That’s the whole job, honestly. A bathroom that is built to budget, doesn’t leak, looks great, and holds up for the next decade. At Blue Rhino Plumbing we handle the full scope, from demolition and waterproofing through to tiling, fixtures, and final fit-off, so you’re not stitching together three different tradies and hoping it all lines up.

, Rueben, Blue Rhino Plumbing

What does a bathroom renovation actually involve?

A great bathroom renovation starts with a great brief. Bring us your inspiration images, your wishlist, and your budget, that’s all we need to get started. We’ll work through the layout with you, help you understand where to spend and where to pull back, and lock in a plan before anything’s touched.
Bring us your inspiration pictures, your list of what you want in the new bathroom, and your budget.
We work through the layout with you, show you where it makes sense to spend and where you can save, and agree the plan and the fixtures before any demolition starts. That is how we quote a bathroom renovation, and it is how we build it.

If you’re renovating your family bathroom

A new bathroom changes how your home works every day. A layout that suits your family makes a busy school morning easier. An updated ensuite can finally match the rest of a home you have already renovated.
Whatever the reason for your renovation, we plan it around your space, your budget and the way your household

Renovating a bathroom in an apartment or unit

A bathroom renovation in a unit has a few extra steps. Your building’s strata by-laws may set working hours and approval steps for a renovation, and some of the pipes in your bathroom may belong to the building rather than to your unit. Check the by-laws with your strata manager before we book the start date, and we will plan the work to fit the conditions your building sets.uses the room.

Bathroom Trends We Are Loving in 2026

  • Large-format stone-look porcelain: Makes a smaller bathroom feel significantly bigger and genuinely low maintenance
  • Fluted feature walls, evolved: Wider, chunkier profiles and scalloped shapes replacing the micro-flutes that look great in a showroom and collect dust in real life. They are impossible to keep clean!
  • Natural textures: Oak veneer vanities, stone-effect tiles, anything that feels considered rather than off-the-shelf. The best bathrooms in 2026 mix textures and finishes with intention
  • Brushed nickel tapware: Matte black has held strong but brushed nickel is the finish we’re specifying most right now and the finish last longer
  • Wall-hung vanities: Still the single most requested change we see, they clean up the floor visually and make any bathroom feel instantly larger
  • Rainfall shower heads with a separate handheld: Once a luxury spec, now pretty much standard in a quality renovation

What Affects the Cost of a Bathroom Renovation

Bathroom renovation costs vary too much to quote over the phone without seeing the room. We walk through the bathroom with you, give you options, and then give you a quote. These are the things that change the cost most:

  • Moving the plumbing: moving a shower, a bath or a drain means cutting into the slab or the floor and rerouting the pipes behind the walls. This is the biggest cost driver in most bathroom renovations. If the wet areas stay where they are, the cost stays more predictable.
  • Wall-mounted taps: wall-mounted tapware needs plumbing set into the wall and lined up precisely before the wall is closed. Taps mounted on the vanity connect above the bench with flexible hoses, which is a simpler installation.
  • Mosaic tiles: mosaics need far more cuts and grouting and a perfectly level surface, so the tiling takes longer and costs more.
  • Frameless shower screens: made-to-measure frameless glass costs more than a standard framed screen, and it needs walls that are straight and plumb.
  • What is always included: stripping back to the bare floor and walls, new waterproofing and new sheeting are part of every full renovation we carry out.

The one thing nobody can see before demolition is what is behind the old tiles. If we find water damage in the structure, framing that needs replacing, or asbestos, we stop, show you what we found, and explain the options before anything is covered over.

Where to spend and where to save

Keeping the layout the same is the single best way to save money, because you avoid the cost of rerouting pipes and drains.
Spend your budget on the waterproofing, the plumbing fixtures and the cabinetry, because failed pipework or waterproofing costs far more to fix later than it does to do properly the first time.
Tiles and tapware are where you can save: good mid-range options, installed well, look great, and it pays to shop around or wait for a sale.

Called out for an emergency at end of Oct and Rueben turn up at my property earlier than expected. Recount my problem to him and he patiently surveyed my driveway and while could not initially identified the source of the problem, he asked to survey my backyard as well. Sure enough the problem was there although the problem/symptoms were at the front of the house. Thank you for your time and delayed your dinner then to sort out my issues. Appreciate your professionalism and great work ethics.

I can’t recommend Reuben and Isaac highly enough! They recently came to my home to fix a complicated plumbing issue that had stumped several other plumbers. Not only did they diagnose the problems, but they also explained everything clearly. Their professionalism, skill, and attention to detail was very impressive. It was a relief to finally have the issues resolved. If you’re looking for plumbers who really know what they’re doing, these are your guys!

The boys did an absolutely fantastic job, with very little notice. They even corrected some work a previous plumber did. Fixed the pipes in my tiny kitchen reno, then came back and connected my appliances once the benchtop was done. Polite, friendly, they made me laugh. Would use them again. Can’t wait to use my kitchen once the electrician finishes the power points.

Rueben was a pleasure to deal with right from the start—nothing was ever a problem. He always kept me updated on what he was doing, and his team was very professional and clean. It’s so hard to find good, reliable tradespeople these days who don’t try to rip you off or do dodgy work. Blue Rhino Plumbing is very highly recommended—5 stars!

Waterproofing in a Bathroom Renovation

Waterproofing is hidden once the tiles are down, and it is the one stage of a bathroom renovation where corners must never be cut. Every bathroom renovation we carry out gets new waterproofing and new sheeting. We never reuse the old waterproofing, however good it looks.
The waterproofing is applied by a licensed waterproofer to the Australian Standard for wet areas, AS 3740, before any tiling starts.

The Certificates You Receive After a Bathroom Renovation in NSW

Ask any bathroom renovator which certificates they will give you at the end of the renovation before you sign anything. You will need them when you sell the property, make an insurance claim or deal with strata. On a full bathroom renovation with Blue Rhino Plumbing, you receive these certificates:

  • A waterproofing certificate, issued before tiling starts, confirming the wet area waterproofing meets AS 3740 and recording what was waterproofed, which membrane was used and the warranty terms.
  • A plumbing Certificate of Compliance, issued when the plumbing work is finished. NSW Fair Trading explains that this certificate confirms the work complies with the Plumbing Code of Australia and AS/NZS 3500 and names the plumber responsible for the work. Where the work needs an inspection, the certificate is also submitted to Building Commission NSW.
  • A gas Certificate of Compliance, issued after any gas work in the bathroom, such as connecting a gas hot water system.

If the renovation moves any fixtures or drainage, we submit a Notice of Work before the work starts. NSW Fair Trading explains that a Notice of Work is not needed for a bathroom renovation where the location of the fixtures has not changed. If the sewer drainage is altered, a Sewer Service Diagram is also provided. Keep all of these documents with your property records.ause failed pipework or waterproofing costs far more to fix later than it does to do properly the first time.

Bathroom Renovation FAQS

Find answers to common questions about our plumbing services, pricing, and 24/7 availability across Sydney.

A standard family bathroom runs seven to fourteen working days once we’re on site, assuming the brief is locked in and materials are on hand before we start. What blows timelines out is decisions being made mid-job. Tile changes, fixture swaps, layout rethinks after demolition has started. We lock everything in before we touch a thing for exactly that reason.

No, but you’ll need a plan for the days you’re without the bathroom. For a single-bathroom home we try to sequence the work so you’re not without facilities overnight, but it depends on the scope. We’ll talk through the logistics before we start so there are no surprises.

This is actually one of the most important questions to ask any tradie before you sign anything, because without the right paperwork, you can have problems when you sell, make an insurance claim, or deal with strata.
At Blue Rhino you get three certificates on every full bathroom renovation:

  • Waterproofing Compliance Certificate: issued before tiling starts, confirming the wet area waterproofing meets AS 3740 and was applied by a licensed waterproofer. It details exactly what was waterproofed, which membrane was used, and the warranty terms.
  • Plumbing Certificate of Compliance: issued on completion, confirming all plumbing work meets the Plumbing Code of Australia. A copy goes to you and a copy goes to the regulator. If we’ve moved any drainage or fixtures, a Notice of Work is submitted before we start. If the sewer line is involved, a Sewer Service Diagram is required on top of that.
  • Gas Certificate of Compliance: issued after any gas work, confirming installation meets AS/NZS 5601 and NSW Fair Trading requirements. Required before a gas retailer will connect or reconnect the service.

Keep all three with your property records. You’ll need them when you sell, make an insurance claim, or deal with strata.
And here’s a simple test before you hire anyone: ask them upfront which certificates they’ll provide at the end of the job. If they hedge, change the subject, or can’t give you a straight answer, that tells you are dealing with a company that will not back the work.

Always. Every renovation we do gets new waterproofing and new sheeting, we never reuse what’s there regardless of how it looks. Waterproofing is the one stage you can’t cut corners on.

Waterproofing Compliance Certificate: is issued before tiling starts, confirming the wet area waterproofing meets AS 3740 and was applied by a licensed waterproofer. It details exactly what was waterproofed, which membrane was used, and the warranty terms.

Blue Rhino manages the full scope, demolition, waterproofing, sheeting, tiling, plumbing, and fixture fit-off. One point of contact, one timeline, one job. You don’t need to find and coordinate a separate tiler or plumber.

Yes. Before the start date is booked, check your building’s strata by-laws for working hours and approval steps, and we will plan the renovation to fit the conditions your building sets.
