A blocked drain never picks a good time. Whether it is a toilet that will not clear, a shower filling up around your ankles, or a kitchen sink backing up mid dinner, Blue Rhino Plumbing clears it and finds out why it happened. We are Sydney local, we answer the phone around the clock, and we turn up with the gear to sort the blockage on the spot in most cases.
We are a licensed and fully insured Sydney plumbing team (NSW contractor licences 289152C and 356773C), owner run by Rueben, and we treat an overflowing or completely blocked drain as urgent work.
Blocked Drain or Toilet? What to Do First
A few simple checks can save you a mess before we arrive. None of this replaces a proper clear, but it can stop things getting worse.
How We Clear a Blocked Drain
There is no single tool for every blockage. What is right depends on where the blockage sits, what is causing it, and the type of pipe. Here is what we use and when.
- Plunger and hand tools: For a simple blockage close to the fixture, a proper plunger or a hand auger is often all it takes. It is the quickest, lowest cost option when the problem is shallow and local.
- Drain machine and electric eel: For blockages further down the line, we run a motorised drain machine, often called an electric eel, through the pipe. The rotating cable breaks up the blockage and pulls it back or pushes it clear. It is a reliable way to restore flow in longer runs and older pipes.
- Hydro-jet drain cleaning (high pressure water jetting): For grease, sludge, silt and stubborn build-up coating the pipe walls, we use a high pressure water jetter. It scours the full bore of the pipe with a focused stream of water rather than just punching a hole through the blockage the way a snake does, so the pipe is left properly clean and flowing, not just clear enough to limp along. It is the method of choice for recurring blockages.
- CCTV drain inspection to find the cause: When a drain keeps blocking, or the cause is not obvious, we send a waterproof camera down the line. It pinpoints exactly what is going on inside the pipe: roots, a crack, a collapsed section, a belly in the line, or a solid object, and gives you a fixed plan rather than guesswork. It is also ideal for a pre-purchase drain check. See our CCTV drain inspection page (/cctv-drain-inspection/) for more.
- Root removal: Roots that have found their way into a pipe are cut out with specialised mechanical cutting heads run through the line, then flushed clear with the jetter. Because roots grow back through the same crack or joint, we will usually camera the pipe afterwards and talk you through relining the entry point so it does not keep recurring.
- Pipe relining (no-dig): Where a pipe is cracked, letting roots in, or partially collapsed, clearing the blockage alone will not hold. Relining cures a new pipe inside the old one to seal cracks and keep roots out, usually without any excavation, so your paths, driveway and garden stay put. The new liner can last around 50 years, and it usually works out cheaper than digging up and replacing the pipe. We only recommend it once the camera has shown it is the right fix.

Why Drains Block and How to Reduce the Risk
Knowing what caused the blockage is half the job. These are the causes we see most often in Sydney homes.
- Grease and fat build-up: Cooking fat poured down the sink is liquid when it’s hot and solid when it cools, coating the inside of pipes over time until the flow chokes down to nothing.
- Hair and soap scum: The combination of hair and soap residue is behind the majority of slow bathroom and shower drains. It knits together at the drain and slowly narrows the outlet.
- Wet wipes and sanitary products: Wet wipes, including those labelled flushable, do not break down in the same way toilet paper does. They snag and gather in the line and are a common cause of blocked toilets.
- Tree root intrusion: The smallest crack or poorly sealed joint in an underground drain is enough for a root to find its way in. Once inside, it keeps growing and catches everything that flows past.
- Foreign objects: Children’s toys, toothbrush caps, cotton buds, jewellery. Toilets and drains collect things they were never meant to handle.
- Collapsed or damaged pipes: In older Sydney homes, clay or concrete sewer pipes can crack, settle, or partially collapse over time, which slows the flow and traps debris.
